Devshayani Ekadashi Importance and Story π
π³17th July Wednesday Importance of Devshayani Ekadashi:π³
π³The special significance of Devshayani Ekadashi has been described in Brahma Vaivart Purana. All the wishes of a living being are fulfilled by this fast. This Ekadashi comes after the Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Ashadh month which is called Yogini Ekadashi. Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month is called Devshayani Ekadashi. Chaturmas is considered to start from this Ekadashi. No auspicious work like marriage etc. is done during this period. It is believed that from this day Lord Shri Hari Vishnu sleeps in Kshirsagar and then he is woken up after four months. That day is called Devuthani Ekadashi. The gap in between is called Chaturmas.
π Devshayani Ekadashi is also known as Dev Devshayani, Maha Ekadashi, Tholi Ekadashi (Telugu), Hari Devshayani, Padmanabha, Shayani and Prabodhini Ekadashi.
π Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat Katha
Dharmaraj Yudhishthira said: O Keshav! What is the name of Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi? What is the method of observing this fast and which deity is worshipped? Shri Krishna said, O Yudhishthira! I am telling you the same story that Brahmaji had told Naradji.
π Once Devrishi Naradji expressed his curiosity to know about this Ekadashi from Brahmaji, then Brahmaji told him: In Satyuga, a Chakravarti emperor named Mandhata ruled. The people in his kingdom were very happy. But no one knows what will happen in the future. Therefore, he was also unaware that a terrible famine was going to hit his kingdom soon.
π There was a terrible famine in his kingdom due to no rain for three years. This famine caused chaos everywhere. There was a decrease in the religious yajnas, havans, pandan, katha-vrat, etc. When there is trouble, where does a person have interest in religious activities? The people went to the king and pleaded about their pain.
π The king was already sad about this situation. He started thinking what sin did I commit, for which I am getting punished in this form? Then with the aim of finding some way to get rid of this pain, the king went towards the forest with his army.
π While wandering there, one day he reached the ashram of Angira Rishi, son of Brahmaji and prostrated before him. The sage asked about his well-being after blessing him. Then he wanted to know the reason of wandering in the forest and coming to his ashram.
π Then the king folded his hands and said: Mahatman! Despite following all the religions, I am seeing the scene of famine in my kingdom. After all, why is this happening, please solve this.
π Hearing this, Maharishi Angira said: O King! This Satya Yuga is the best of all the ages. In this, even a small sin is punished very severely.
In this, religion is spread in all its four stages. Apart from Brahmins, no other caste has the right to do penance, whereas in your kingdom a Shudra is doing penance. This is the reason why there is no rain in your kingdom. Till the time he does not die, this famine will not end. The end of the famine is possible only by killing him.
π But the heart of the king was not ready to kill a sinner Shudra ascetic.
He said: O God, my mind is not accepting that I should kill that innocent person. Please suggest some other solution.
Maharshi Angira said: Observe the Ekadashi fast of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Ashadha. Due to the effect of this fast, it will definitely rain.
π The king returned to the capital of his kingdom and observed the Padma Ekadashi fast along with the four castes. Due to the effect of the fast, there was torrential rain in his kingdom and the whole kingdom became full of wealth and grains.
π The special significance of Devshayani Ekadashi has been described in the Brahma Vaivart Purana. All the wishes of a person are fulfilled by this fast.
